Fennec Shand in ‘Bad Batch’ – “Reckless,” According to Ming-Na Wen

From our friends at PopTonic:

The Mandalorian has been wildly popular since it premiered with the launch of Disney+ back in November 2019. With its success, it has launched a number of new characters into the Star Wars universe, like the ever-adorable Grogu and Mando-daddy Din Djarin.

Look, the show is done so well that Star Wars fans stopped arguing with each other long enough to watch it.

But during the first season, we were introduced to another new character, Fennec Shand. She’s a bad*ss bounty hunter that Din almost refused to help find because of her reputation as an assassin.

The one and only Ming-Na Wen brought the character to life, but she was only there for a brief episode before Toro Calican left her for dead. Luckily, Boba Fett found her out there in the desert and helped save her so she could come back in the second season — no doubt because fans took a liking to the character. Cue all the scenes of Din, Boba, and Fennec being bad*ss together.

If you didn’t catch that post-credits scene from the season two finale of Mandolorian, here’s your spoiler alert warning.

In that post-credits scene that announced The Book of Boba Fett, we see Fett take over the criminal operation once led by Jabba the Hutt and his second-in-command Bib Fortuna. But right by his side is none other than Fennec. I, for one, am excited to see these two front their own series.

This won’t be Fennec’s only new series, though. She’s also being featured in another new show to enter the Star Wars franchise. The character will make her animated debut in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars spinoff, The Bad Batch.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch will take place in the aftermath of the Clone Wars. It follows the experimental clones of the Bad Batch (originally introduced in Clone Wars) as they find their way post-Clone War.

A “Reckless” Fennec in The Bad Batch

Fennec is cool in Mandalorian, but the character will definitely be different in The Bad Batch, thanks to the show’s place in the timeline. We’ll get to see Fennec years before she ever crosses paths with Din.

According to Ming-Na Wen, this means the character will be different than what we’ve seen in the live-action shows. She won’t quite be the experienced assassin we see in The Mandalorian.

“She’s cutting her teeth as a bounty hunter in The Bad Batch… She’s still a loner, a drifter… There’s just a sense of more recklessness about her, just bravado. You know, a young punk,” Ming-Na explained in an interview with StarWars.com. “She’s more adventurous and willing to take greater risks because she doesn’t know what the consequences are.”

Fennec as a reckless, adventurous “young punk” will definitely be an interesting change of pace. And while she’s a smooth, accomplished bounty hunter during The Mandalorian, everyone has to start somewhere, right? There’s a ton we don’t know about the character, so I’m curious to see her backstory.

In the interview, Ming-Na didn’t mention anything about how Fennec plays into The Bad Batch or how she crosses paths with Clone Force 99. I’m willing to bet that reckless attitude will likely cause some headaches for the elite clone team.

We don’t have an exact date yet, but Star Wars: The Bad Batch is slated to hit Disney+ in 2021.
